Neal Dow Elementary School has two types of chess opportunities available to its students. The first is the Chess Club which meets voluntarily on Thursdays during lunch. The club is the place where students can learn to play chess or improve their chess skills. We also have the Chess Team which meets mandatorily on Wednesdays in order to learn and improve upon chess strategies and tactics. In order to be on the team, students are required to pay the $35 tuition which provides them with membership to the Sacramento Valley Scholastic Chess League as well as the United States Chess Federation. Scholarships are available to students with such a need. Our team competes once a month in sanctioned chess tournaments held at different schools throughout our league which extends from Yuba City to Plumas. Interested students or parents should contact Mr. Obe in room 4.
