Welcome to Mr. Obe's Kindergarten!

Let me begin by saying that I am very glad to be starting the new school year with you and your family! Teaching is my passion, and I look forward to the adventures I will be sharing with your child this school year! For parents as well as children, this is both an exciting and scary transition, but I am committed to making the step into school as easy as possible! Together we can make this an exciting year of fun, learning, and growth for everyone!

There are some important ways you can make this year more successful for you, your family, and me. These include:

Please have your child at school on time! This is extremely important since much of our foundational instruction happens at the very beginning of the day. Playground supervision begins at 7:50. No children should be on campus before then unless they are part of our breakfast program. Check in with the office manager if you are interested in enrolling your child in this program.

• Your child’s most important meal of the day is breakfast! It is the fuel that drives their little brains! Please be sure to send your child to school having had a wholesome breakfast. It is one of the most important things you can do to help them learn!

• Please make sure your child has enough sleep. They are so very busy during the day. They need all the help they can get!

• If your child is showing obvious signs of being ill, please keep them at home!

• Please send a snack to school with your child each day. If you are able to donate bulk snack items to assist with children who are unable to bring a daily snack, I will welcome the donations!

• Since much of the work in which children engage is play, please dress your child accordingly. Expect that their attire will sometimes get soiled during the course of the day. In instances where children get particularly dirty, we have clothes that we can temporarily loan to a child for the remainder of the day. If your child comes home in clothes they did not come to school wearing, please clean and return them as soon as possible. Open toed shoes are not allowed at school. It is also a very good idea to label everything your child brings to school.

• Your child should leave personal toys at home. I will occasionally have a “share day” where children can bring a personal item to school for the day, but it is wise to make sure the item is not valuable and/or expensive as we will not be responsible for the safety of the item while it is at school.

•Your potential participation in the classroom is very valuable! If you have the time to volunteer in class, I would like to talk to you right away! You need to get a TB shot and complete some paperwork before you are allowed to be a volunteer in the classroom.

• Our library day is Friday. Please make sure your child brings their books back on that day!

• You have received a packet with paperwork that the school, the district, and I need in order to fully meet the needs of your child. If you can quickly complete and return these forms, it would be extremely helpful!

• I have established a website for you and your child to use as a resource throughout the year. The URL for this site is www.stevenoberlander.com/homework. I highly encourage you to visit it at least once a week. This is the best way for you to keep track of what is going on in class. Your child will benefit significantly if you are able to support at home what we are learning in school.

• Homework will generally consist of you reading to your child. Homework will not begin until we are well into the school year.

• The best way to contact me is by email at soberlan@chicousd.org. I am usually good about getting back to you within 24 hours. Leaving me a phone message at school is not the best way to reach me.

Again, I am so very grateful to be a part of this exciting chapter in your family’s life. I am truly committed to making this year a wonderful experience for your child. Let the games begin!
